Roddy Mill

Aka Horst’s Mill / Risser’s Mill

James Roddy (Rhoddy) built a grist and sawmill on this site in 1721 or 1722. In 1802 Michael Horst was paying taxes this mill. From 1805 to 1813 it was David Horst, and from 1814 to 1825 the owner was Peter Horst. In 1816, Peter Horst built the current stone merchant mill. It was Peter Horst’s mill in 1864, and by 1899 it was Abe Horst’s. The mill was using a tractor for power in 1937. Peter Horst Risser was the owner when the mill closed in 1940.

Note: James Roddy also built the mill on the Chickies Creek later known as the Newtown Mill. The Newtown mill was owned by a Risser in 1812. Most of the old references to a “Risser’s Mill” are referring to that mill, which is south of Mount Joy.

The mill is located at 1481 Risser Mill Road, Mount Joy, PA.
