River of the Year

The Conestoga River has once again been nominated for the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers “River of the Year” award. There are two other streams in the running (no pun intended), the Lower Schuylkill River and the Chillisquaque Creek. The River of the Year designation comes with a $15,000 grant which would go a long way to help the Conestoga River club sponsor water cleanups, Lancaster Water Week events, and other educational events. Some of the money could also go toward the Ad Crable Environmental Writing Lecture series in honor of the late environmental journalist, Ad Crable.

In the words of Frank Diffenderfer, who was one of the founders of the Lancaster County Historical Society,

One of the most beautiful streams in the world flows quietly through the green meadows and along the sunny braes of Lancaster County for a distance of more than sixty miles, draining a territory 315 square miles in area, affording endless themes of beauty to the brush of the painter and the fancy of the poet.
